Panel: Alex Mottus (Pembina Hills) and Ken Robitaille (Battle River)
In the summer of 2019, ATLE ran a comprehensive survey of technology use along with the Staff Composition and organizational practices of IT Departments across the province. Twenty-six boards responded providing a cross-section of urban and rural jurisdictions. Our presentation will provide an overview of what we found and along with the opportunity for discussion on the questions and the results.
Pascal Couture, Director, Exam Administration Branch
Jeremy Wiebe, QA Coordinator / Quest A+ Product Owner, Exam Administration Branch
Provincial Assessment Sector will provide a demonstration of an HTML5-based, updated version of the Quest A+ application, which will be deployed in summer 2020. Following the demo, the presenters would like the opportunity to discuss ongoing technical challenges and opportunities surrounding the administration of provincial assessments.
Andrew Klaus (Cybera)
The need for new and improved cybersecurity practices within the education sector has never been stronger. As part of a new cross-Canada Post-Secondary initiative, Cybera is deploying an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) system. In doing so, we’ve discovered a few surprises within our system — mis-configurations, bots on the prowl, and malware, just to name a few.
In this session, we will demonstrate how we integrated the IDS into a simple organization and a more complex organization. We will share some of the challenges and considerations of deploying an IDS. We’ll also review some of the events we discovered and how we addressed them, and provide ideas on what schools can do in their systems to uncover similar risks.
Michael Lynn, GM for the Microsoft Education Team in Alberta, will provide an update on how Microsoft is supporting educational institutions as they make the transition to remote learning in response to COVID-19. This update will highlight the available resources that support a variety of technical onboarding scenarios and professional development pathways for educators and administration. In addition, Michael will share some global trends in how institutions globally have responded to COVID, implications for what “the new normal” may look like, and how technologies within your current existing Microsoft agreement can support inclusive education, student engagement, and well-being. Lastly, we will attribute some time for an update regarding Provincial Microsoft Licensing with time for open QA.
Mike Emery (Alberta Education)
Please join our conversation regarding Digital Student Document implementation along with other PASI updates.

Imagine you are a leader at a fictitious Alberta school division and have just received word of a significant data breach. How do you respond? What do you do first? Join this session to collaborate with your colleagues on handling a simulated data breach tailored to the Alberta/Canadian context. During the simulation, group responses will be discussed in order to highlight best practices and answer questions. This session is based on resources from the U.S. Privacy Technical Assistance Center.
We are rich in data but poor in information. Dan Durand and Ian Macialek show what the Power of Dashboarding is starting to do in Edmonton Catholic.
ESports is a form of competitive video gaming. Students can be the gamers, shoutcasters, analysts, coaches, marketers in an organized club. We will explore how Alberta high schools are creating and running these clubs, as well as provide resources and contacts.
Open textbooks and educational resources offer not only cost savings but can be an essential part of an open pedagogy and create powerful learning experiences. See how OER has been used in Canada and how it enhanced the learning environment, quality of resource and generated innovation through collaboration.
Cam McNicol (Bell)
Please join Alberta Education and Bell Canada to discuss things you might want to be thinking about as your school authority transitions to the new services over the next two years. Some topics that may be covered include; what to expect when Bell meets with your authority, (how to prepare in advance, timelines,) why would you choose one service over another, what is the status of the line rate service, what are some of the new capabilities that you will see once you transition.
Panel: Rick Gilson (SAPDC) (ARPDC), Janet Bell (EPSB), Chad Starko (StarCath)
A panel of experts from across the province will be sharing ways that school divisions can collaborate, communicate and/or leverage capacity within ATLE, ETCATA, ARPDC and Alberta Education to provide ongoing edtech support to districts in times of fiscal restraint.
